Beautiful strangers? I’ve known more than I deserve.
I once met a guy in a cab from Mali to Guinea and, when we arrived at our destination, he offered to walk me to the hotel listed in my guidebook. The town was in a blackout. It was late and I didn’t speak French. The hotel was closed.
“No worry,” he said, and we walked across town to his house. His wife served us rice and Coca Cola and then I fell asleep on a bare mattress on their dirt floor.
The next day the guy took me to the city center and helped me find a cab to my next destination. He smiled big as we drove away. After 12 hours in a cramped West African station wagon, we arrived at 2am. The guy’s cousins were waiting for me.
